    Hi guys,

I am looking at Gutenberg, but for the life of me, I can’t find Categories for my posts. I have a number of Categories, News, guides, etc., but how do you locate it in Gutenberg. I know you can do it in Quick Edit but this is not the right place to do. Can anyone advise.

    Cheers
    John

That would be under the Categories drop down menu on the right hand side of the screen.

    Hi Samuel

Thanks for replying to my question. Please have a look at the following screenshot, it is not there. Is there something I need to turn on?

Dunno. Maybe you have something disabling categories in general? Try turning off other plugins and using a default theme until it reappears, then you’ll know what is messing with it.

Just reading through some other support threads.. When you load the editor screen, look at the browser javascript console. Do you see any error messages there? Particularly look for messages that say “Failed to load resource”.

    Hi Samuel

The plugin that has stopped the categories from showing up was an items Security Pro.

So there is something in there that I need to turn off or on.

    Happy days.

    Thank you.

    Kind regards

@tlcjohn, just ran into that same issue. Yes, it is iThemes Security issue. You must turn back ON the “Default” Rest API. Apparently if you use “Restricted” then that removes the Categories and Tags (and probably a lot of other things).

The thing that Otto says to do is a great way to diagnose issues like this. I was looking at the Network panel of the Chrome console.

Ok. You might want to report the issue upstream to that plugin’s authors then.

The Gutenberg code relies on the REST API being functional. If this security plugin disables the REST API, then the editor will not be fully functional.

Basically, the editor is asking WordPress for the list of categories, and this security plugin is blocking it for some reason. So, ask the security plugin’s authors how to not cripple the REST API.

    Hi Samuel,

Two great minds think alike, I have reported the problem to Ithemes.

    Thank you.

    Kind regards

Just following up here, it’s not n issue in their plugin, they literally have a setting labeled “Disable REST API” which you need to un-tick for Gutenberg to work as it should.

So far the new editors is working well except for one issue. In categories and tags, it shows the dropdown of my options correctly in English but not in any of my other WPML languages any more. The other options show correctly in the chosen language.

    @geoffreym

That’s a different issue that deserves a topic on it’s own.

    Back on topic:
According to the iThemes Security (Pro) plugin 7.1.0 (5.4.8) ChangeLog:

Bug Fix: REST API Protection blocked the Taxonomies route for all users.

So updating the iThemes Security (Pro) plugin to the latest available release fixes the Gutenberg issue as raised in this topic. Actually tested and yup it works ??
