• I am new to WordPress and somewhat new to web development.

I am trying to change my permalink type to include the month, day, and name – but keep coming up with the error.

Where / how do I update my .htaccess file?

    Much appreciated!

  • URL?

    What error?

Your .htaccess file is in your WP root. You can see it with FTP unless someone has turned off see hidden files or the like. You can copy it into notepad, add the additions WP suggests when you change permalinks and FTP it back to the server.

    Our blog is located here.

The error I get is “Oops! This link appears broken” an HTTP 404 – File Not Found error.

I use Microsoft ExpressionWeb to do my editing. Opened the root folder and clicked the option to show hidden files. Where in the root is it?

    Thanks kmessinger!

I just found this post while looking for a solution to the same problem. In my case, the .htaccess file didn’t exist, so I created one using the text given by the WordPress control panel and uploaded it to the server – presto! worked like a charm.
