I’m a little confused. I created an account on H5P.org and created a piece of content, a timeline. Am I supposed to just embed that on any site I want to use it? What is the wordpress plugin for? I’d like to create a timeline and include it on multiple domains. and when I update that timeline at the source, it will update on all the domains. Can I do this with H5P? Hope someone can shed some light on this topic for me.

  • Hi MDC2957!

The site h5p.org is for testing the software (as mentioned in the box above your content when editing it there). You could embed the content from there, but would face several limitations (content being public, no media such as videos larger than 16 MB, no customization, no xAPI, etc.).

Using one of the plugins (e.g. for WordPress) is the intended way to use H5P. All your content will then be created and stored on your own host system (e.g. WordPress) and you have way more control over it.

And yes, with H5P you can create and maintain a timeline source and embed it on multiple other sites which would always show the latest version.

    Best,
    Oliver

Thanks for the reply! If my media sources are from sites like Flickr and YouTube, would there be any limitation as to number of embed views if hosting on the h5p.org website? I don’t expect a high amount of traffic but just trying to determine if I really need to use the WordPress plug-in or not. ‘Mo plugins, ‘Mo trouble ??

Currently, there are no restrictions on the number of embeds or something similar, so you could use h5p.org. However, the site does not have unlimited resources. There was a major blackout for several days a couple of weeks ago, because too many people were exploiting the opportunity to host content there for free and the servers could not cope with all the traffic. The amount of traffic caused by one person may not seem much, but multiply that by a couple of thousands who think the same way, and you’re causing trouble for a lot of people.

I understand what you’re saying, wouldn’t want to cause any problems in that regard, especially since you’re providing such an awesome tool. Last question – if I make a Timeline for example, on one site using the WP plguin, and then I duplicate that site using something like All In One WP migration, would the Timeline also be duplicated on the new site where I wouldn’t have to embed it from the first site?

I don’t know “All In One WP migration” unfortunately. In order to migrate H5P content as-is, it would have to make a copy of /wp-content/uploads/h5p and of the h5p tables in the database. But even if it doesn’t: H5P was designed for being easily transferable. You can download content from one site (doesn’t matter if it’s hosted on WordPress or anything else) and upload it to another site. Might be some extra effort, but shouldn’t be a problem.

yes, the AIO plugin copies the whole site including the content folder, and the database

If it’s a complete 1:1 copy, then I guess only the path settings of WordPress might be relevant, but you’d have to modify these to match the new site anyway.

Ok, I’ll have a play with it and see how it goes, thanks for the info!

    You’re welcome!
