    Hello @marjoriesdaughter

    I hope you’re doing well!

When image is optimized with Smush, it has been sent to our remote server, where it is optimized and the server send it back to your site. Images are stored on your site, and not on our servers.

The images can be located, from /wp-content/uploads/ directory, per WordPress default design.

Are there then two sets of images?

WordPress, creates thumbnails upon an image upload, which are smaller versions of an original image. These images are more than one, and spends on your theme and another 3rd party plugins that may require certain thumbnail sizes. Please see here for a reference:

Have a good day and take care!

    Kind regards,
    Nastia

    Thank you for the response!

A clarification, which of these is correct?

    1. Smush replaces the image sizes that WordPress has created.

    2. Smush adds a second set of images to the server space.

    3. Something else. If so, what?

    Hello @marjoriesdaughter

    I hope all is well!

The Smush please replaces an original image with an optimized version of it, after an image is being smushed with the plugin.

Let us know if you have any further questions!

    Cheers,
    Nastia
