Remember the directory where it writes the XML files needs to be writable. If the program cannot write to the folder, then nothing can be written. We had this issue on one site. We had to change the permissions to make directory writable. Not sure that will help.

Also remember if your install is inside a directory like /blog/ then the sitemap might actually be yoursiteroot/blog/sitemap_index.xml … usually you can click the button found in the SEO admin menu under sitemaps. That is how I often go to find it. ??

Last I knew, there were no *actual* xml files generated and saved to the server, they’re all dynamically generated.

Thank you both – neotrope and Michael

i checked the permissions and they were correct however Michael’s answer may explain why i can’t see the files.

If you go to the plugin and select show xml files they seem to be “somewhere” and look correct.

I’m just curious how google finds them?

    HI,
Michael Beckwith is correct; I had stuck in my head the former XML sitemaps I was using before moving to Yoast which *did* write static files.

Signcarver: you need to login to your Google Webmaster account, or sign up for one, confirm you own your site, then from the tools on Google you can “submit” your sitemap to them, and they will use that to index your site. It will also report problems like duplicate content/meta data, any problems like missing pages, etc.

In theory, Google’s “bot” should be able to find the sitemap anyway, however that is not a given. So, using the webmaster tools to submit it and they will scan your content and verify all pages are indexed is likely a good idea. And, arguably the point of having the XML sitemap to begin with. ??
