    Hi.

I have a multisite setup using subdomains, but when I try to go into either the dashboard or visit the site, the browser returns “can’t find the server”. In other words, it’s not working as it’s meant to.

It’s probably a fairly simple setting that I’ve missed.

I’m on my own VPS, using Apache, with a dedicated IP and I’ve setup wildcard subdomains through cPanel. I’ve removed entries from the DNS, although it wasn’t working when there were entries in there. Any ideas would be very greatly appreciated and I’d be very happy to go back over any steps, in case something is missing.

    Thanks, Chris

  • I have the very same issues.

I’ve followed the steps very closely and to no avail! On webvertisingstudios.com everything still works fine, but the designated subdomain: en.webvertisingstudios.com is not visible.

I’d be very grateful if someone could help me out as well.

    Thanks so much,

    Wout

I seemed to have overcome this problem at the moment, but still not entirely sure what was causing the problem.

Here are the changes I made – if it helps anyone.

    1. set an “A name” record in your DNS to include *.yourdomain.com (i.e. “host” = “*” “Points to” = “the IP address of your blog” (dedicated IP)
    2. within cPanel>subdomains enter a wildcard entry (*.yourdomain.com) Do not redirect.
    3. check permissions on blogs.dir in wp-content (mine are currently set to 700)
    4. the very first multisite I created, added a folder within public_html (the folder had the same name as the first multisite I created) I do not know why this folder was created in public_html. When I created a second multisite (leave the first one and its folder for the moment) and viewed the dashboard and/or site – it worked!
    5. all new multisites created after this time have worked.

Still not entirely sure what was causing the problem, or why a folder was created in public_html by the same name as the first multisite. However, it’s not happening anymore!

#1 and #2 are usually the issue.

There never should be a folder created in public_html though, that’s probably due to a subdomain weirdness where you may have made a NAMED subdomain. That often generates a folder.
