When trying to upload img “unable to create directory”

When trying to uplad an image (when using both flash and browser uploader) I get the following error message:
Unable to create directory /../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../tmp. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
Does anyone know how to fix this?
