When I log in to my dashboard most of my options are gone

  • When I log in to the dashboard for one of my sites, I don’t have options to view/edit/add pages, appearance, etc. I only get:

    Posts
    Comments
    Profile (doesn’t show permission level)
    Tools (just a bookmarklet)

    My other website dashboards are working fine. When I visit the website, all the pages are there, I just can’t change anything because those options are no longer showing. It seems like I’m not an admin anymore, but I’m just guessing.

    I’m not an expert, don’t know php, etc. I just use WordPress and the themes. I’ve hunted through the forum, but can’t seem to ask the question correctly to get the right answer (or the answer is so complex I have no idea what they’re talking about or if it’s even the right answer).

    The website is at https://www.parsec-sff.org/confluence/registration. The parsec-sff.org website used to be an old style html site but was switched to WP a few months ago. Both websites have been fine (and I planned to move the registration website under the new main website, but this happened before I could).

    I’d really rather not start over again if I don’t have to. I’m concerned I was hacked somehow.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    I’d love to try deactivating the plugins, but I can’t. I can only:
    1. Add a post
    2. Look at comments (there are none)
    3. Look at my profile
    4. Under Tools, use “Press This”

    That’s it.

    Connect via FTP and rename your plugin folder to force a deactivation of all of your plugins.

    I was just trying to do that using the iPower Control Panel, but apparently I can’t. Trying to figure out how to login via ftp right now.

    Sigh. I logged in via https://ftp.parsec-sff.org on Firefox. I got a listing of directories, etc. I went to the plugins directory for this website. Now what? How do I change it? When I click on it, it merely opens. When I right click, I get Firefox options.

    Whoa! I logged in using ftp from my computer and changed the name of plugins to plugins-hold.

    But I still don’t get the dashboard I’m used to.

    I’m not sure as I have no idea what program you’re using.

    Google may be able to help you with a specific program, tho.

    I’m sorry … I did manage to change it using ftp directly from my computer. I was just typing “ftp.parsec-sff.org” in the command line of Firefox before.

    But I changed it and still only have limited access to my dashboard. ??

    I have a *little* experience wandering around in unix environments (I can list, change directories, make directories, and rename things)

    Try switching to the default theme automatically by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    Um … now I get a completely blank screen when I go to the website.

    Check your sites error logs. They should let you know whats going on a little better than we can.

    And it made no difference to what I saw when I logged in to my dashboard. How do I reset users? It looks like my admin was set to no rights at all (judging by what I see when I log in to the dashboard)

    Okay, where would the error logs be? Any hints? iPower’s search only searches the current directory and no subdirectories.

    Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.
