When I click on 'Smush It Now' I get redirected to blog home page??
-
Ok this is just bizarre. I recently replied to this thread but I just discovered a new issue which may/may not be related to current page speed reports:
So when I click ‘Smush It Now’ I get redirected to my blogs homepage. As of 2 days ago this wasn’t the case, so not sure/when how it got started. I’m wondering if this is part of my page speed problems on image optimization as well.

Hi @slis,
Hope you’re well today! Sorry you’re having some trouble there. Definitely odd that you’re getting redirected with the smush option.
Could you possible try ruling out a theme or plugin conflict by switching to a default theme like Twenty Fourteen, and seeing if it still redirects?
If so, then try deactivating other plugins and seeing if it still redirects?
That’ll help to find if there’s a conflict, which seems likely in this case.
Thanks,
DavidHi David!
So I found this thread, and since that plugin is no longer supported I’ve switched to a new firewall plugin and no longer have that issue.
But I’m still having issues with images not showing as optimized in speed tests as per below? All images show as smushed in media browser so a little perplexed. Any advice you have would be awesome.

Thanks!
Hi @slis,
Hmm, any chance you could try deactivating all other plugins and testing with that?
That’ll help rule out any caching issues.
Thanks,
DavidI’ve been trying to whittle it down but nothing stands out when I deactivate/reactivate plugins, but I have quite a few. Do you know of any plugins that could directly interfere with smushit? Does W3 cache cause any issues?
Also, why does google page speed insights and gmetrix give such different looking reports? Google seems much harsher and pickier:

Thanks!
Hi @slis,
Really sorry for the delay here and also for any prior confusion. I think I missed something when you mentioned that previous issue was sorted. Are you now successfully able to smush images in your Media Library?
When you go through the smush process, are you getting any messages? You should see success messages, are those showing?
Could you maybe provide a screenshot of the Media Library page?
Also, could you try enabling the debug process at Settings > Media and let us know how that goes, if you see any errors?
Thanks,
DavidDavid,
I’ve taken a screenshot, how do I add it to this post? I don’t see a way to attach image?
You can see which images have confirmed being smushed. It looks like they’re succeeding according to the screenshot, but on speed tests it still shows as not optimized fully:
https://gtmetrix.com/reports/smellslikeinfinitesadness.com/sMnFc8fq
Have you ever had any conflicts with the plugin and W3 cache? Is there a setting I need to switch in there somewhere?
Also, I’ve read that lazyloading plugins can help with image issues. Would that work in conjunction with smushit?
And I just enabled debugging. How exactly does that feature work?
Hi @slis, I’ve not seen any specific issues with W3 and this plugin myself thus far, just a couple past issues that were actually related to the smush.it service instead.
To include images here you can post them through any service like Google Drive, Dropbox or screencast.com. You can simply provide a link to the images that way.
Layzloading plugins should work just fine alongside the plugin, it handles the smushing of the images before they’re ever loaded on the page, so there should be no problem there.
With the debugging enabled, you should see any relevant errors displayed on the page when attempting to smush images.
Your screenshot should help us to see the smushed status of the images. But I doubt that’s actually an issue given what you’ve just said.
That said, have you tried deactivating W3 caching and testing with gmetrix?
Looking forward to seeing this sorted for ya! ??
David,
Thanks for the info:
Here’s the screenshot for the media folder: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/56062128/Screenshot%202014-04-01%2016.27.27.png
Do you have any recommendations for a lazy load plugin that works well with smushit?
I will try disabling W3 and testing it with gmetrix later today.
Thanks!
Michael
David,
Disabled W3, and besides a slower page score, I saw no improvement with image optimization, so something else must be the culprit.
Any other thoughts you have will be great as to what might provide a fix?
Thanks!
Hi @slis,
Thanks for looking into all that. I was confused as to how gtmetrix could still see those images as not being optimized so I found an actual file located on your site:
https://smellslikeinfinitesadness.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/batman-75th-anniversary.jpgI downloaded that directly and uploaded it direct to Yahoo’s service:
https://smush.it/Pressed the smush button and it read:
Smush.it did not find any saving of your image(s).
However, gtmetrix does show that there can be some savings in file size.
Unfortunately, this is a case where Yahoo’s smush.it service doesn’t appear to optimize the images sufficiently enough for gtmetrix’s or Google’s ratings.
I’m really not sure what else to say except that Yahoo would need to update their service in order to accommodate this one. ??
I’ve joined the feedback group at smush.it and haven’t seen anything regarding this, I’ll see about posting something. I’ll also mention this to the team over here, as it’s definitely an interesting case. Any news on the issue, I’ll be sure to post back here. ??
Cheers,
DavidDavid,
Thanks for getting back to me. Well that is a frustrating development :-(. I always worry about google penalization with issues like this? Please do keep me posted on your findings. I hate to switch to another image optimizer and also wonder if it would make any difference anyways.
So weird how it shows as being smushed in media library but still not showing in the page speed results.
Do you have any suggestions for a lazyload plugin or anything else you think I could try to help with the loadtimes/optimization?
Thanks again!
Hi @slis,
Really sorry I missed your question about a lazy loading plugin suggestion. Since WP Smush.it is a back-end plugin, any lazy loading plugin should work just fine with it.
There’s a great list of ’em here too:
https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/6-lazy-load-plugins-to-make-your-wordpress-site-faster/I tried the first one and it worked great, no configuration needed.
Just to clarify though, the reason it’s showing as smushed in your library is because the images indeed are being smushed, for the most part. It’s just that they’re not quote so optimized as gtmetrix and Google expects them.
I can’t seem to find a reason why though. I’ve never had this happen myself. But it seems it’s just the images on your site for some reason.
Could I ask if you’re processing the images yourself somehow before posting them to your site? Are you specifically converting images to jpg format using another program?
I’d love to find out why your images specifically aren’t getting optimized.
Thanks,
DavidDavid,
Thanks for the link. I’ll try out the lazy load plugin you mentioned.
And the only thing I do beforehand before uploading images to wordpress is if I have a large image file I’ll usually adjust the size with the ‘Preview’ app on my macbook. I wouldn’t think that would cause an issue, or could it?
Whoa…one thing I should ask. Does your smushit plugin work in tandem with WP Smush.it NextGEN Gallery Integration?
I thought I read awhile back that both plugins worked together…or am I causing a conflict by doing so? I’ve had both plugins installed for a while now.
I feel stupid mentioning this as it just now occurred to me (not the most tech minded person) :-/.
And if I smushed an image after I posted a blog post, will that work retroactively, or do I have to smush it before putting it in a post? Always wondered that. I do it before now, but in early stages of my blog I’d do it after the fact.
Thanks!
I notice this when I view Next Gen plugin page “This plugin hasn’t been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.”
Do you think if I delete their plugin and resmush with your plugin that that might provide a fix? So sorry I didn’t realize the 2 plugins didn’t compliment each other (if that is correct.)
