When do the expiration emails go out?

This is not a current feature of PMPro, but one way you could do this is by using the PMPro Mailchimp add on to add your members to a specific email list at sign up, then set up your email autoresponders to send at specified times based upon the date the member was added to the list.

So a member buying a 4 month membership could receive a reminder email 2 months or 60 days after, which is the same as 60 days before expiration, and so on.

@jbatson, there is one reminder email in PMPro. I don’t know if the schedule is based on how the membership is set up, but our PMPro subscribers are getting “about to expire” emails at 9 days before their subscription runs out.

does anyone know if the expirationwarning.php, expirememberships.php files in the scheduled directory run automatically or do i need to set up a cron job to run them?

All PMPro emails run automatically.
