I am running Yoast 15.1 and I am wondering two things:

1 – Under what scenarios do you need to enter a Facebook App ID in the settings under ‘Social’?

We use the Facebook sharing feature in Yoast to share posts from our WordPress site to our Facebook page. Currently, we don’t need to add a Facebook App ID to use this feature.

2 – Will the Facebook post sharing feature continue to work without a Facebook App ID after October 24th when Facebook drops support for oEmbed?

@kenjpete The ‘Facebook App ID’ that you have the option to input in Yoast SEO under Social>Facebook is a specific ID number assigned to your Facebook application (if you have one). You can find additional information on registering and configuring your Facebook application ID here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/apps/register/#app-id. If you have not specified a Facebook app ID for your site this does not interfere with the ability to share posts on Facebook, and if you don’t have a Facebook application you can just leave the ‘Facebook App ID’ field blank. We also have more information on this here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/warning-fb-app-id-hasnt-been-included-in-the-meta-tags/

As for oEmbed, yes the features will continue to work. The social previews for Facebook are output as Open Graph tags.

@devnihil Thanks for the quick response. I suspected the FB social sharing feature would continue to work because I didn’t think it used oEmbed, but I wanted to make certain since my organization uses that feature often.

Also, I understand why the Facebook app ID box is part of the social sharing feature, but can you give me an example of a FB app that might integrate with Yoast SEO where a FB app ID would be needed? I trying to understand and find a real world example of that feature in the event that it would benefit my organization.

    Thanks!

    Hello!

Facebook apps are a way for Facebook to integrate with a site. A common example would be logging into a site using your Facebook account. If you’re not using that, you can just leave that field blank.

@onlyincebu Thank you for your response, but I already am aware of examples like using Facebook to authenticate to a site. What I am wondering is does anyone have a real-world example of using a FB app to integrate with the Yoast SEO plugin? I can’t think of a reason why you would need to do that?

We are afraid to say that we are unable to confirm whether anyone else has any real-world example of using a Facebook app to integrate with the Yoast SEO plugin. Since it’s a public forum, someone else might shed some light on this for you.
