What’s the concept of ‘User Links’ in TML

I checked around for a documentation on this but couldn’t find one yet.
What’s the function of the User Links feature in TML?

I’m thinking of changing my user slugs from the defaults, for example:

editor => manager
author => writer
subscriber => user

Is this what the feature does, and if Yes, how exactly do I make it work?
I want to be certain of this before adding another plugin to my site.
