What’s the best way to control who reads what?

  • I am a new-ish user, running WP 2.1 and I’m a bit hesitant to really start posting until I sort out the security features.

    I do not want most of my blog viewable to the public (or registered users unless I grant them specific access). I have several people I would grant access to, but the “password protect” option seems like kind of a hassle at first glance. Is there an easier way to control what users view, without prompting for a password at every post? Ideally, I’d like something similar to LJ, where you can set up filters and have that box to tick in every post.

  • Log in to the admin panel. Under USERS, you can set different access levels for the users (administrator, editor, author, contributor, subscriber, and premium subscriber.

    This might point you in the right direction.

    Also, if you are concerned about who views your site, you may consider adding a robots.txt file to your site. This (along with a few other steps) can help you restrict search sites from copying your pages to their search engines. For more information on the robots.txt thing, just google the file name.

    I added a robots.txt file and the <meta name=”robots” content=”NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW”> tag to the header.php file. Hopefully that will keep out the search engines… if anyone knows of any other steps, please feel free to post them here.

    As for the users thing, I’m not interested in letting anyone else make actual posts or have admin rights.. I just want to control who can read posts and was wondering if there’s a way to filter the security level of individual posts by users, or something along the lines of how LJ works. I have family, friends and coworkers who might be allowed (different) levels of subscription, so I’d like to figure out a way to set that up if possible.
