• I am trying to your use wordpress in a creative way and I was wondering whether comments took up as much resources as posts.
I can either make a fixed number of post (lets say 100) an have countless amounts of comments (lets say 100 comments per post so a total of 10000) or I can have a countless amount of post (lets say 10000) and a normal amount of post (lets say 100).
At the end of the day do I really have the same amount of data (assume content for comments and posts are identical) or will post consume more resources than comments?

  • In this case, what is your definition of resources if I may ask?

Disk space for comments vs posts (same amount of words)
    memory and cpu consumption.

I think I read that there is no limit to posts or comments you have correct?

So in that case I was trying to figure out which way would perform better. My gut says having more post would be worse than having more comments but maybe at the end of the dame its the same because the same amount of words(data) would be stored and accessed.

Are you talking about loading times in general or specifically for the comments pages (post pages)? If you for example is talking about in general then my guess would be posts. If you are talking about loading up a specific post then I would say it ‘more of’ depends on the number of comments on that post page. This is a althought a guess of mine, since I haven’t done any benchmark to it.., in which I believe I would need to do to be really able to answer your question..

I believe it also depends on how your visitors will be using your blog. Will their main interest be to read posts..? Well, then my guess would be that comments would have a bigger role on server performance, hence loading times compared to posts.

So it’s important to consider, how the blog will be ‘used’ of the visitors..

When it comes to diskspace, I don’t even want to guess. No idea whatsoever.

I found this benchmark if it can be to any interests.., not answering your question, but some ‘basic’ info.
