What makes a host fast

  • My page takes 2s after connect before the 1st byte is sent to the browser. I’m using stock WP with about 5 plugins. My CPU usage is usually fine but it also spikes to 90%+ without anything special happening and I don’t know why.

    I check sites using tools.pingdom.com

    Is my host just slow? What makes this 2s wait? Is it the CPU? RAM? What do I look for in a host, how do I find one that’s faster?

  • There’s a lot of factors that go into a website’s load speed. If you’re on discounted shared hosting then your site is competing for resources with the others. Without seeing the site it’s impossible to say what some issues might be. If you are very concerned about site load speed then you might want to look into a dedicated WordPress host; there’s quite a few around now (WP Engine, ZippyKid, others) and they tend to do a good job of speeding things up.

    what exactly does ‘managed’ wp hosting mean? Does it mean it’s WP only host and you just get the WP login instead of a cpanel like other hosts?

    They both talk about visits/mth which is unlike anything else I’ve seen, so it’s a bit confusing. My email is with gmail but I’d want my subdomains to point to other hosts.

    Managed WordPress hosting means that all they do is WordPress, and they know how to optimize WordPress sites specifically. You can expect much better support and much better performance than you’d get from an all-purpose host like GoDaddy. Most of them have lots of tools to help you manage the site beyond the WP admin (not usually cpanel, many have built out their own stuff). I’m not quite sure what your question is about gmail and subdomains, that’s probably best directed to the hosts themselves.
