• Hello,

    I am new to WordPress.

I checked my hosting directory and I found there’s a folder named ‘application_backups’ however I don’t understand where did it come from and how it was created.

I am hosting on GoDaddy, and I am running my website on wordpress. When I checked the content of the folder, I found that my website is being backuped automatically. However I don’t have any backup plugin in my website.

Is it by any chance that Godaddy backup my website automatically, or this is a new feature in WordPress?

I am worried because it’s eating my disk space very quickly.

  • That sounds to me like some kind of extra service being provided by your host, and it might or might not be of any real use to you. I used to have something similar at my own host, and I got rid of it to reduce my expense after I had began doing my own backups.

It seems like it’s an extra feature, but I’m unsure if it’s being provided by my host or WordPress has an auto-backup feature.

I’m afraid to remove the folder and then something goes wrong.

You do not have anything within WordPress doing backups unless you have installed and activated a plugin for doing that. And if you want to do you own backups as everyone should have, you need at least these three or four items:

    1. full content of /wp-content/ folder (or at least /themes/ and /uploads/)
    2. copy of wp-config.php file
    3. copy of “root” .htaccess file
    4. database backup

Those things plus a fresh download of WordPress can get you going again in almost any situation where your site has been compromised or lost.
