I’m more than a little perturbed that the plugin author has not been forthcoming with helpful information that would help to mitigate any current or future damage, and allay fears of its extensive user base.

I specifically want to know — in detail — the nature of the exploit?

Why and how (in detail) hackers were able to get access to at least one of my sites and cause damage?

How are sites being exploited?

And finally, a comprehensive remedy to ensure sensitive data like Ecommerce credentials are safe.

The lack of response is as maddening as it is discomfiting.
