what is the .htaccess-file supposed to do?

  • I just installed WP (2.0.2), and after some trial&error also made a succesfull import of b2evo-posts from database. For testing reasons I made the installation in a subdirectory, when I saw it was working just fine I followed the instructions in the docs on how to move index to the root. I was told to also move the .htaccess-file, but I haven’t got one in my installation? Is it removed from the latest version and the docs aren’t quite up-to-date? What is it supposed to do? Some redirections? I haven’t stumbled over any situation yet where things does not work as they’re supposed to, so I haven’t got a clue… Maybe I don’t need it at all?

    Ok, thanks.

    I thought it was rather strange that it’s missing in my installation, so I just downloaded the zip again, and no, there’s no .htaccess. Should it be included or is it created during the installation (though I can’t se why it should be)? I didn’t get any installation errors or warnings.

    Are you sure it hasn’t been removed from the last version?

    I think it will be created (if your server allows) when you switch on nice permalinks. If not, you can make it by uploading htaccess.txt via ftp and then renaming it. It can also do lots of other clever complicated things which you can google for :).

    Thank you, sothat’s why I haven’t got one, I haven’t turned on the permalinks yet.

    Yes I know the normal use of .htaccess, but I didn’t understand what this one was supposed to do because I hadn’t tested any function yet where it seemed to be needed. Thank you again!
