When inserting or editing blocks using Gutenberg, a little gear appears next to the block when I mouse over it.

Clicking on the gear doesn’t appear to do anything. Is something supposed to happen when I click on it? If not, why is there?

  • The Gear Icon adjacent to each block displays advanced info on each block in the Inspector side bar which you can edit.

It might not have been hooked up to the Inspector yet, but it should be now. Clicking the gear brings up the block settings.

I think much of the confusion here stems from the fact that the block settings bar is shown by default. In that state, clicking the gear does nothing.

Now that we have a Post Settings button with a sort of tabbed navigation to show either the post settings or the block settings, we could probably remove the gear icon entirely without much loss of functionality.

This is a great point, and I have tracked it here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/2304
