what is the “directory”?

  • Everything’s set. I’m about to upload wp to my site, but it seems very important that I upload the “contents fo the wp directory but not the directory itself”.

    I’m sorry, I don’t understand. There is nothing labeled “directory”.

    Please advise. Thankyou,

  • After unzipping the files, you should have been presented with a single folder named ‘WordPress.’ This is the directory they’re talking about. Don’t upload it.

    Thank you. Sorry about that. So I empty contents but leave the empty folder on my computer. Why? Will the empty directory serve a purpose? I understand if this is too picky a question. I’m just trying to figure out how all these things work. (I know it’s not all that mysterious when I understand)

    Suppose you want to use WP at your website’s root level, so that when a visitor arrives to www.yoursite.com it opens with your blog. Now if you upload the directory named “wordpress” –> your blog would be at www.yoursite.com/wordpress.
    Or, if you want your blog in a subfolder of your site, like www.yoursite.com/myprettyblog and you again upload the wordpress directory, it would cause your blog to be in www.yoursite.com/myprettyblog/wordpress

    … and after that you’d come back here complaining that your blog is not where you wanted ??
    (just kidding)

    except once you upload to a subfolder you can have it display as https://www.yourdomain.com from the options area – but one step at a time eh, let’s not confuse you. Get it installed where you want and take it from there.
