what is selected option(required) in fields?

Hi
when i create a new radio field, it’s a text area that has labeled as selected option(required), and if left blank it show a wrong message, when i write something to it, it Will be displayed in page that i use the form like a label, whats the usage of this? and whats the difference between this and label of the radio field?
