• I’ve developed WordPress sites for nearly ten years and never – knowingly – used the “Nickname” field / data from User Profiles. Yet it says it’s required.

Can someone explain to me why it’s required? And what is it used for?

It seems redundant when you have the “Display name publicly as…” field + “Username”.

The only pieces of information WordPress requires you to include in your Profile are your e-mail address and a nickname.

Display name is selectable between the user’s username, first name, last name, first/last, or last/first, or nickname. The nickname exists to give you an option to set display name to something other than your username or real name.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. However, I don’t believe this answers my question.

I’m out of more explanations. Hope somebody else can chime in
