I got a load of comment spam this morning passing the AntiSpam Bee plugin. Normally this plugin intercepts all comment spam. I raised the settings by unchecking ‘Trust approved commentators’ and checked ‘Use a public antispam database’. Now the stream of spam continues but is intercepted.

What occurs to me is the spam reason given for all these comments is ‘Local DB Spam’. What does this mean?

    Hi Erik,

“Local DB Spam” refers to Antispam Bee’s option labeled “Look in the local spam database”. The plugin compares incoming comments against comments previously marked as spam.

Thanks Caspar. Leaves me with the questions: where did this sudden massive comment spam come from (already >1000 this day, all directed to the same post). And why did Antispam Bee not intercept these, while it intercepted every spam until now?
I checked ‘Trust approved commentators’ again so the only difference in my settings is the checked ‘Use a public antispam database’. Also the fact that I manually deleted the first >300 spam comments of this attack could have caused the rest of this batch to be marked as spam. They all seem to come from the same ip.

So why did Antispam Bee not intercept these in the first place?

Not sure about it, could be a number of possible reasons. Maybe those first spam comments didn’t look like spam to the plugin, so they got through. Generally it’s a good idea to not delete spam comments, but only mark them as spam. If I’m not mistaken, that’s how the plugin “learns” over time.

Makes sense. I will keep the public spam database check on for this site. If something like this happens again I will mark the comments as spam.
