what is difference between archive,category template

I friends i am new user in wordpress so will you tell me what is difference between archive and normal tempalte.
Because i had studied how to create template for wordpress in which we also add archive template file but i didn’t find out it loaded by wordperss.
If I have to load archive template in presence of index.php so it possible

Pls HELP ME
