• I have a new blog at FrictionFactor.com. At times the loading time is fine, at others abysmal. The obvious candidate for the cause of the problem is the hosting service, Godaddy.

They assure me that it’s not their service and offer some advice:

    1. My blog site is too heavy
    2. Start using WP Super Cache
    3. Don’t use so many plugins

    1. The images are small thumbnails. Maybe some of the scripts used by widgets are heavy? Compared to many others, the site doesn’t seem so heavy. I am working on a facelift for it.

    2. I started out using this, but I was never sure if there were special settings I needed to make to WP Super Cache to make it work correctly. The documentation was not clear to me. This recommendation from Godaddy was ironic because an earlier Godaddy tech advised me to dump WP Super Cache in favor of W3 Total Cache. And now when I remove W3 Total Cache my article Are Home Theater PCs Ready for Prime Time? stops displaying its content, displaying just the header and footer. Way odd. I posted a message about this in the Plugins and Hacks forum.

    3. I’m new to WordPress, but it seems really odd that a gazillion helpful sounding plugins and widgets are offered, but if you use more than a few, blog performance goes bad. And nobody seems to know how many is too many (which is not unusual since I’m sure it depends upon the plugin).

Recommendations? How to diagnosis this issue as a mortal?

    Thanks.

P.S. It’s also ironic that one of my recent posts is about Does Anybody Read These Posts since none of my posts here (3) have received any response. Feeling lonely. <smile>

  • I am having similar problems, but now I can’t get any stupid images to insert into my posts. It is very frustarating.

Sorry I can’t help you, I can’t even help myself.

    Dailysurvivalgear,

One of my favorite plugins is Faster Image Insert. It was a thoroughly aggravating experience to have to insert images one at a time into my blog. What a waste of time! I couldn’t believe WordPress hadn’t already provided a solution. Now…it’s a piece of cake to upload a batch of images from my computer, change the settings of each as desired (size, position, caption text, etc.) and insert them all at once into a post. I love it. Then I move them to the desired place for each image in my post. For that I use the CoffeeCup HTML editor because I edit my posts locally in HTML and them copy/paste them into the WordPress HTML editor box. I don’t use WordPress’ WYSIWYG editor or associated plugins because it tries to be too “helpful”.

godaddy is notoriously crappy with too many folks on their shared servers

Don’t I know it, I can’t wait till my account expires. I’m going to host gator.
