What if there is already a CPT for downloads registered?

For a client project we are thinking about adding your Downloads Manager Plugin.
There is already a custom post type called “downloads” registered in that installation. So before installing your plugin we wanted to ask if this could cause a conflict with the custom post type that will be added with the plugin installation.
If yes, what would be the best way to keep the existing post type with all its data while being able to make use of your plugin.
