• What folders should be backed up b4 upgrading WP. I want to backup manually, so I will know what is what with the backup. I am afraid of what the backup software may be backing up and how to access and upload it if trouble comes.

My back up software consists of WB DBManager and WordPress Database Backup.

I fear having something go wrong now that I have a number to posts and their comments on my website.

  • When you use the export function in the WP admin, you’ll have a file with all posts, comments, etc. The only folder on the server you need to secure is wp-content, because it contains themes that you uploaded and/or edited, plugins, etc. All the rest, safe the wp-config.php file in the root of the installation, can be deleted without problems (when a new WP pack is oploaded again of course). But of course it never hurts to make a backup of the database too, that’s where all your posts are.

Thank you so much for your comments. I would ask you to restate all that it is best for me to download.

It seems to me you said I should use the export function for the posts and comments, etc. And I should download the wp-content and wp-config.php.

    Do I have that right?

Can it all be downloaded via WP export function? I have never used that and have no idea exactly what it does. I do have FileZilla, too.

    no non nononono

use filezilla. download everything that makes up your wordpress site — every.thing.

use that database backup plugin you have, get a backup of your database.

Can it all be downloaded via WP export function?

    no. see above.

you want a full backup — NO skimping. Trust me if something goes wrong, youll be happy you listened to me.

I believe you. I am going to do it. Unfortunately I have an account on HostGator (they are good) that has all five of my blogs in it and the blog I am concerned about is the primary in the account. That means I will be downloading five blogs to make that happen. I am sure there is a way around that, but I am not savvy enough to figure it out.
