What does it mean that anyone can register?

    In my WordPress site, when I go to Settings and then General (I think it is, my WordPress is set to Dutch and there it is in Instellingen, then Algemeen), there is an unmarked box allowing anyone to register. Just below that, the standard role for new users is set to “Abonnee” which is Dutch for a subscriber.

    What is this function for?

    I run my website on my own, and I want to be the only one able to create pages and posts. I of course welcome comments on blog posts (there are none yet, but there will be soon) but I want to be the only one able to create pages and posts.

    Is it better to leave the box saying anyone can register unmarked?
