    I am setting up a large 100+ network, and am at the sub-domain vs. subdirectory fork in the road. Ubuntu 16, installed with apt install.

    Most all of the 100+ sites in the network have their own domain names.
    I can easily point that domain name to the IP of WP.

    theirDomain.net -> 1.2.3.4/blog/theirDomain…

    But what do my users see in their URL field of their browser?

    -Do they enter theirDomain.net, but upon landing on their site, see: 1.2.3.4/blog/theirDomain… ?
    -Or does mod_rewrite keep the root (even as they traverse their own site) as: theirDomain.net/… ?

    And of course, is this behavior different for sub-domains vs. sub-directories?

  • You only need to point the DNS records to the server. The users should be able to traverse the site as theirDomain.net. mod_rewrite and WP will take care of the urls.

    The same applies to both subsites and subdomains. Subsites for examples become theirDomain.net/site1 theirDomain.net/site2 etc .. likewise for subdomains site1.theirDomain.net and site2.theirDomain.net etc

    Hi Bogus Exception!

    The site visitors & users to a subsite should see only the mapped domain.

    One of my multisites has a couple of sites that show the uploads as the subdomain (clientname.maindomain.com/wp-content/uploads…, instead of clientsite.com/wp-content/uploads…), but all the others (the other 50) show the mapped domain. This has never been an issue for my clients, so I’ve never investigated why this happnes on those sites, but it does seem to be not the usual behavior.

    You guys are awesome. Ready for the ‘twist’? I have an ssl cert for MY base domain & unlimited sub-domains. I’m about to enable it, but I’m betting that without MY domain I address bar, it isn’t even used!

    @bet,

    Thanks for writing. I’ll soon find out how this works with an ssl cert… The cert is only for the main/target domain…

    I don’t think it will work with their domains in the address bar…
