• I am pretty new at WP and building a website for our little company. It will just be information about us, no shop or the likes, but maybe a contact form. I have been reading and experimenting and am ready to jump in.

I am wondering what are the plugins that no website should be without. I am thinking here about backing up, security, caching, speeding it up, search engine optimisation, EU data protection (would like to avoid as many cookies as I can as they make writing your company info harder) and such things.

I look forward to your suggestions. Thanks.

  • Hi @changeagent,

Welcome to WordPress! It’s great to hear that you’re diving into building your company website. Since you’re looking for essential plugins for security, performance, and compliance, here are some must-have recommendations:

    1. Security & Backup

    • Wordfence Security – Offers firewall protection, malware scanning, and login security.
    • UpdraftPlus – A reliable backup solution with cloud storage options like Google Drive and Dropbox.

    2. Performance & Speed Optimization

    • WP Rocket (premium) or W3 Total Cache (free) – Helps with caching and improves loading times.
    • Smush – Optimizes images for better performance without losing quality.

    3. SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

    • Yoast SEO or Rank Math – Helps with on-page SEO, XML sitemaps, and meta descriptions.

    4. Contact Forms

    5. GDPR & Cookie Compliance

Since you’re looking to avoid unnecessary cookies, you might want to configure your analytics tool (e.g., Google Analytics) to use privacy-friendly settings.

Let us know if you need further guidance! ??

I did some looking at all the recommended plugins you suggested.  Once again thank you.

Can I ask something I could not find?  Smush.  There are (mainly legacy) browsers that do not support the new format.  Does Smush cope with that?  Or does the picture not load?

You had better to ask that question directly on their support forum.
