My first experience with Wordfence… I am using the free version 6.0.15 on a new WP installation. When I start a scan I get endless churning of 4 scan items and this error message:

[Aug 13 20:36:05] Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 65536 bytes) in /home/tiptoppet/public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/lib/wordfenceHash.php on line 335
[Aug 13 20:59:31] Scan kill request received.

I am less than enthusiastic about upgrading a plugin whose free version is not working.

Any help would be appreciated. ~ Ron

  • Hi Ron,

When scans do not complete it usually points to lack of system resources. Make sure you have enough memory and CPU available. Are you on a shared hosting platform? If so, you may want to disable Live Traffic to gain more CPU headroom. Here are the system requirements:

    https://docs.wordfence.com/en/Wordfence_system_requirements#Memory

Here is a link to troubleshooting scans not completing. Try the suggested settings:

Report back and we can troubleshoot more if necessary.

    Thanks!

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply. I requested my hosting company (Liquid Web) increase the memory form 32mg to 64mg per the message on the Wordfence options page. Their reply was that 32mg should be sufficient for normal operation and if they increased memory to 64mg it would likely make the server (shared) unstable.

I migrated my account form Hostgator to make sure I have stable, robust hosting and although I am spending about 4 times more, I am having this kind of issues… I am at a bit of a loss what to do now.

    Any suggestions? ~ Ron

    Hi Brian,
I had a talk with tech and they have made some server config changes than I believe will address the series of error messages that have been plaguing me and for sure the above mentioned issue was clearly NOT the fault of Wordfence,

Thanks for your help. ~ Ron
