WF not allowing ADMIN login.

    WF isn’t allowing me to login as the admin of the site on first login.

    I have to go reset the password each and every time I do.

    And then it recognizes that “OH YEAH, HE’s THE ADMIN!!”.

    So to be clear…

    Step 1.) Go to login page.
    Step 2.) Enter username/password.
    Step 3.) Password not valid, use password reset function.
    Step 4.) Go to email get link for password reset and click it.
    Step 5.) Reset password to previous password.
    Step 6.) Login with the same credentials now works.

    Hmmm…gosh, is there an easier way to do this ? I think so. The question is why is this doing this now ? I’ve used WF on several sites and this has never happened, not once.

    Hi @magicmiles, thanks for getting in touch.

    This sounds to me like there could be a conflict or other error, possibly with 2FA or reCAPTCHA that’s throwing an invalid password error when it can’t authenticate your user. Admittedly, this might suggest the password would fail every time but I’m not initially sure from your post whether the page you’re attempting first is different to the page you’re redirected to as part of the password reset process.

    Do you have 2FA/reCAPTCHA enabled, and do you have any other user management plugins or custom login forms as part of your site/theme? Wordfence doesn’t control your WordPress user password values, so it won’t be changing them without your knowledge.

    Try disabling all other plugins except for Wordfence, along with reverting to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty-Three and see if you’re able to complete the login first-time that day (or whenever it normally fails). If this works, reenable your plugins and theme one-by-one to see if any Javascript issues in your browser console appear. Let us know any errors that you’re seeing either on-screen or in your console with just Wordfence enabled.

    Note that Wordfence’s Login Security features only work with the default login/registration pages for WordPress and WooCommerce.
