I’m updating this only because I just completed the upgrade to 1.5 earlier this week. The upgrade didn’t go as flawlessly as I had hoped but I managed everything by actually installing all the db tables fresh and then importing in post and comment stuff. In the end, all is well.

I’m pretty pleased with how it looks. I spent one full night working out having both popup windows and normal page login/registration pages available depending on whether or not javascript was enabled. You wont really see the effect unless you register and login though with a js enabled browser, unfortunately, but trust me, its sweet ??

Anyway, I would be curious to know about any browser specific glitches.

The only left is the archives page, which hopefully I will finish today.

    Thanks a ton in advance!

this are really god news. if you need help pls let me know

    great site!

    Great site!

    thanks!

Btw, I set up a user account just so ppl could check out how the login trick works.. use :

    sneep/sneep

and make sure you have javascript enabled ??

Wow, really really REALLY good stuff!

I like the hang-loose ‘cartoonish’ style a lot, very nice.

I thought I would bump this old topic for a couple reasons. First because I had been turned onto the lightbox javascript a while ago on another site, and never saw fit to implement it, but finally did so last night (there is a wp plugin for it that works perfectly) and because, I believe I’ve finally accomplished everything I would like to do..

I realize that some of you scoff at the notion of having “toys” on a blog, but I think that a domain name such as mine demands that a little bit of fun be had by all visitors. For that reason, and because I like to “dabble”, there are 3 flash objects in the sidebars.

I could have done 2 of them using plugins (the poll and quotes) but wanted something more unique.

The lightbox plugin, added last evening, is a wonderful addition to any site, but even better when added to a fixed width site such as mine.

I am also especially pleased with my collapsable archives list. At one point I had hacked up a way to have two columns for archives (minimizing the scrolling) but I think this is much spiffier.

The contact page is not a plugin.

The randomized trackback urls is a plugin — I reccommend it to everyone.

Ive been playing around with a google maps set up and have thought about trying to plugin-izing it, buit quite honestly unless youre willing to fork over the cash for maxmind’s database, you are prolly better off using one of the free services.

The actual design of the site was inspired by another site on the net — however that site was done entirely in tables.

So anyway, I reckon that’s it. People that want whitespace are going to be overwhelmed, but thats ok ??

The login/registration/lost password pages are all customized to match the rest of the site. A javascript version of that allows for a popup window to be used (honeslty who needs that big page for that little forum??), and for those browsers that dont have js enabled they get a regular page. Additionally, the main site refreshes once you login to let you know that you have successfully logged in. (All of that is something I’ve yet to see on any other blog, but then I rarely regiester on blogs)

Just a quick plug too .. the most recent post is a little contest I’ve set up.. $20 bucks (US) to right answer.

Lastly, the theme is not meant to be shared — please dont ask.

    thanks!

I like the background, header and here-there images. Other than that it *is* quite busy.

ty, its meant to be busy. Like I said, i’m not one of those “i need whitespace” ppl

Thought so and thus its quite succesfull.

Welp, I missed all those cliquey reboots, but thats OK! It was definitely time for a change.

I messed around with just 2 columns on the front page, but really didnt care for the “standard” look it had. I also wanted to use excerpts only on the front page. That presented the “problem” of having lots of open space to fill.

Anyway, so after some adjustments, I’ve got 3 columns, and my excerpts, and I ended up with some space for flash toys

Category pages and single post views are different, of course.

All in all, Im very pleased.

The columns were a pita, so if anyone runs into trouble or they dont display correctly, AND your using a browser that doesnt qualify as archaic, I would love to hear about it. Obviously screenshots help tons when talking about column displays.

About the only thing Im considering adding to the front page is a tag cloud (in the open space)
below the make poverty history banner. I’m just wondering when I will want to tag all the posts.

Other than that, Im done, for now ??

Well, hello there! Hadn’t looked at your site in a while, and I see this post of yours here, so I checked it out now that I’m venturing in the wonderful world of WP. Very very nice. You certainly achieved a “non-blog” look, which is cool.

I still have to get in touch with you ’bout that hosting thing ??

hahaha, heya Nic! I actually had to think, and then your domain name clicked in my head.. duh!

And whats this? joining the dark side? mmm….

and yes, you do, or I do ??

    Friendly little bump:

I decided I needed to have a few of those damn socialize bookmark things, but I didnt want a whole row of little images, or a map of them. Instead, I did mine without a plugin and used a _very lite on javascript_ suckerfish variation.

I could have edited one of the plugins, but truthfully 1. I didnt want that many items and didnt care to install oe just to see if I could pick and chose, and 2. I had already built the menu in a sandbox so it was nothing to just add the php.

Anyway, Ive looked at it in ff 1.5.x, ie 6 and 7 and flock, and it looks fine in those but im interested in knowing if any other browsers see anything odd alignment wise.

A good simple link is here:

    thnx!

PS: The javascript is only there for ie and the hover effect, btw. It’s all CSS. Not original, but nice all the same (I think).

I just noticed that the CSS ids being dulicated on archive pages is breaking my validation.

I can fix that obviously, by using a class, but im not sure what to do with the js then ..

    var lis = document.getElementById("navmenu").getElementsByTagName("LI");

That will need editing. If anyone has conquer’d this before Im open to suggestions.
