So I just spotted 3 instances of this in the space of 5 minutes when updating two plugins:

Updated WordPress from version 4.4.2 to 4.4.2.1.next.minor (auto update)

That was quickly followed by an email telling me to update to 4.4.2 (I updated to 4.4.2 weeks ago).

Any idea what might cause this and should I be worried? I also use Easy Updates Manager and I realize that auto-plugin updates are not captured by the audit log.

    Hello TheHungryGeek,

Thank you for showing interest in our plugin.

The “strange” alerts you are seeing are related to WordPress core. I.e. the plugin is monitoring the WordPress core for updates and it seems the plugin you are using to update the plugins is triggering it.

To confirm, would it be possible to disable the Easy Update Manager and update a plugin? If you do not see such alert then such “auto update” alerts of WordPress core are being generated by the Easy Updates Manager.

    Please advise.

I too am getting these messages:
Updated WordPress from version 4.4.2 to 4.4.2.1.next.minor (auto update)

I do not have the Easy Update Manager or any other ‘plugin to update the plugins’

The messages appear in the log whenever I go to the WordPress core updates admin page, /wp-admin/update-core.php

Edit: clicking on the “Check Again” button on the /wp-admin/update-core.php page also triggers this message.

Thank you @wpwhitesecurity for your prompt reply – Would you please be able to provide some more details for us? Since we are using this very valuable plug-in of yours for security reasons, you could see it’s a little troublesome to see a message like this appear with no clear explanation. I’ve been looking through my WordPress back-end files to try to pin-point the cause fearing it was malware and it wasn’t until I came to your forum to look for another piece of information was I able to find anything on this update. Your help is greatly appreciated!

    Hello all,

Basically when a user accesses the updates page in the admin pages (dashboard), such alert is being generated. This should not work so and it is happening because during the auto updates, WordPress calls that page.

We will be issuing a fix with the next update, which should be available in a week or 2. Sorry if this is causing any inconvenience.

To confirm this is purely a cosmetic bug and nothing is else is affected in the database or files?

    Hi,

it is a cosmetic bug. Just to confirm, anything the plugin does and that is written to the audit log, does in no way has an impact of affects the functionality of WordPress.
