Weird files in my webspace

  • I run wordpress at https://www.macmove.com/mm.

    Something is causing a number of files to be created in that directory. They are named “core.” followed by a number. There are more than 100 of them and they total 1.4 GB of data!

    I have no idea what they are or where they come from; can you help me determine this?

  • Talk to your host, they sound like core dumps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_dump) which would mean there’s something routinely “blowing up” on the server. As it is in your directories, presumably it is something you are running. Some log inspection would likely turn it up.

    I had the same files being produced apparently when I was using the WP-Backup plugin and scheduling the backup. When I removed this scheduling, and just did the backup manually, I didn’t see the files anymore.
