Weird characters after upgrade

  • I used Fantastico to upgrade WordPress, and a lot of my text turned to strange characters such as a€?.

    How do I fix this?

  • I have the same problem after upgrading to 2.3.1. I assume it has something to do with the character set which at present is UTF-8.

    Can I select another character set to resolve the problem? Or is there another workaround that doesn’t necessitate editing every post in the database?

    This problem appeared first in 2.2.x The problem (as you surmised) is a problem with the character set.

    FIX: Commenting these two lines out in wp-config.php fixed it.
    // define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’);
    // define(‘DB_COLLATE’, ”);
