• Since last month something is causing the string “%E2%80%8B” to be inserted *after* all slashes in the URL browser window of any browser I use to visit any link I create on one of my club’s WordPress pages.

On the page cited below it only happens with the June 2018 link. It also is happening with one other page I created links on, but I thought I’d use this one as an example as it is simpler to see the “before” and “after” effects.

It doesn’t seem to matter if I paste the ‘href=’ string into the Visual editor or the Text editor of a page. Either way the URL that shows up in the browser window has the weird character string embedded all through it after each slash in the URL window causing a 404 error.

Does anybody have any idea what is causing this, and/or how to stop it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jonathan

  • Have you tried typing the link instead of pasting it?

Here is an old support thread outlining the problem:

    ericstaytrue,

Thank you for your suggestion – it worked!

There was indeed what appeared to be a single character in the URL line between the slash and the following character. By carefully arrowing over each occurrence (in the WP text editor mode) and back-spacing over the invisible character I was able to get rid of them.

While I’m very grateful for the help, I am wondering what I can do (or NOT do) to avoid having to use this remedy in the future. Is it a symptom of pasting to and then copying from a text editor outside of WordPress that is introducing these weird characters? Perhaps a discrepancy between the character sets of the text editor and WordPress? I guess I’ll have to experiment…

    Thanks again,

    Jonathan
