Website Visitor Has requested a non existing page (404 Error Pages) – homepage

    Hi folks,

    I’m getting the 404 error, but with the site homepage. Here’s what I’m seeing in the Audit Log Viewer:

    “Website Visitor Has requested a non existing page (404 Error Pages) 71 times”
    (Seeing this repeated many times)

    Looking at the actual log file, I’m seeing the following:

    58.10.213.198,Request URL https://www.example.com,
    157.55.39.245,Request URL https://www.example.com,
    207.46.13.91,Request URL https://www.example.com,

    (The only edit to this was to change “actualdomain.com” to “example.com”)

    In System Activity -> “Record the referrer that generated the 404 error” was turned on yet not showing.

    Could this be something to do with non-slash vs slash/ URL? E.g. https://www.example.com doesn’t exist, but https://www.example.com/ is canonical and set as siteurl

    Any ideas on resolving this?

    Hello @websitedoctor,

    Thank you for using our plugin and sorry to hear you are encountering such issues.

    The trailing slash should not make a difference, unless in your setup when the website is requested without a trailing slash returns a 404 error. Can you check and?

    Also, can you reproduce the issue?

    Once you check and confirm the above, please make sure you are running the latest version of the plugin and follow the below procedure to send us some debug logs:

    1) Download, install and activate this plugin: https://www.wpsecurityauditlog.com/downloads/support/wsal-404-debug.zip

    2) Navigate to the WSAL Debug node in the plugin menu.

    3) When the plugin captures a 404 error you should see some data.

    Please send us the screenshot of the data to [email protected]. Do not share such data on the forums here since it can contain sensitive information such as internal IP addresses, URLs etc.

    Hey Robert, thanks for coming back. I’ll report back (privately) once I have some data from the Debug plugin.

    Just to follow-up on this, looks like there’s an issue with the Debug plugin – I think it’s not outputting a closing tag of some kind. Here’s a screenshot:

    (This is the entire visible output at example.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wsal-debug )

    Looking at the source, there appears to be data collected. I’ll play around and see if I can find the issue – if you get there first please link an updated version for me.

    Hello @websitedoctor,

    It seems that your setup does not support the $_SERVER global array. We can work around that though. Can you please download this file:

    https://www.wpsecurityauditlog.com/downloads/support/system_sensor_404.zip

    And replace it in the plugin? The file’s path is:

    /wp-content/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/classes/Sensors/System.php

    With this fix you should be able to see the actual URL being requested.
