Website Structure – Design Recommendations

Hi – I’m totally new to WordPress and want to confirm I don’t go off in the wrong direction. Can someone please offer their expertise?

My current website was designed using Microsoft Expression and information was structured using tables and nested tables. While it displays fine using IE, it doesn’t display properly in other browsers.

I am moving to WordPress (Responsive Theme) and trying to retain the same look and feel as when browsing with IE.
Should I continue using tables to structure information or are there better practices?
Any other design considerations/recommendations?
