Hi,

My WordPress site randomly started loading very slowly over the holidays.

The weird thing is it loads the main menu and background and then severely slows down. I thought it might have been a cache issue so I cleared my cache and even deactivated and reactivated it, but it didn’t help. (btw I used Hyper Cache, but I also tried WP Super Cache which oddly did not work at all with my site and was unable to cache when i clicked test)

I then thought perhaps it was because my WP was not updated, so I updated to version 3.8 and it made no difference on the slow load time.

From my admin panel the website runs at normal speed so I don’t think its a hosting issue.

Can someone help me make sense of this?

I read somewhere it might just be my Apache server needs to be restarted but I have another WP site on that same domain and server and it does not seem to be affected.

Using an FTP client such as FileZilla or your host provided file management tool:

A) Rename the plugins folder in /wp-content/ to old-plugins. Test Site. Is OK now? (plugin issue)

B) Rename all Theme folders in /wp-content/themes/ to old-theme_folder_name. Upload a copy of twentyfourteen. Is OK now? (Theme issue)

C) Do a Manual Update. Delete all WordPress core files in root (except wp-config.php) and delete the two folders /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/. Do not remove /wp-contents/ folder – your themes and plugins reside there… Download a fresh copy of WP3.8 and upload what you just deleted. Is OK now? (WP core files issue)

You can put up a .maintenance file while this is going on and until the error is fixed. Just remove it when you want to test site (just move it to a newly created sub-folder, not one WP uses)

Serious issues. Something is happening in the WordPress load process that is taking anywhere from 15 seconds to over a minute before a page will load.

Like Pioneer explained above disable the plugins then check the theme and report back your findings.

Thanks for the suggestions, I was able to identify the issue by tediously going file by file and removing bits of the code and testing it. I checked the theme files after disabling plugins did not fix the issue.

The problem seems to be coming from header.php, specifically this bit of code:

```
Once I commented out that bit of code the site was loading just fine. Anyone have any idea what that code is/does?

maybe you consider also your internet connection, yes plugins can cause slow of your pc…

The fact the the site root cannot be checked is moot. The fact that a link to that site is anywhere on your site is.
