    Hello,

Starting today my website has been unable to access the wordpress dashboard. When I type in the url with /wp-admin/ I get a long hang, then a 504 Gateway Timeout error. Yet the website itself seems to load just fine.

I am using Hostgator and have already pinged their support for assistance on the issue. I did a search here first but the others who encountered 504 gateway timeouts had recently changed theme files or added a new plugin. In my case I have not made any changes for a long period of time. My knowledge level is relatively low on back-end stuff, I’m definitely not making any changes to databases or server files.

I have not made any changes other than standard WP updates, for over a year now. Why would something like this happen out of the blue? Thanks for your help!

My apologies, the website is sometimes-interesting.com. I’m using latest version of WordPress and I believe I’m only running a handful of the usual plugins (Jetpack, WordPress SEO, etc.) that were installed years ago.

No recent experimenting or alterations, so I’m confused.

    Thanks!

Are you using a local server? what server are you using?

If not, have you discussed this with your hosting provider?

    Thanks for the response Tara.

Do you mean local server as in my own computer? IF so then no, the site is hosted at Hostgator on a shared plan.

I do have a trouble ticket in to them and am awaiting to hear what they have to say.

Update on the problem: Since the first post here I’ve tried probably 50 times to load the page. I’ve had success twice, but was unable to go anywhere from there and got more 504 errors. Yet through all this, the front-end of the site loads just fine. Weird.

Update: I figured out what was causing the problem and will post here in case others find this post in the future in a search.

It was a plugin. The “WP Meta SEO” by JoomUnited. I had installed this about a year ago, apparently the plugin self-updates and something with the latest version started giving me 504 errors all over my website. I eventually got the plugins page to load and after trying 100 times and getting 504 errors I was finally able to disable the plugin. And voila! Problem gone.

So lesson: Even if you didn’t change your plugins, they might have changed themselves. I’ve since learned to run as few plugins as possible. Lighter is better! Good luck to everyone else.
