Website for an organisation with many members and pages

I have been asked to consider taking over as webmaster for an existing site which has over 2,500 members. They have asked for……………

Migration of the existing site name and database with some Pages restricted to Society members only. A membership database restricted to access by specific officers of the Society, with the facility for on-line membership in the public pages. Secure payment facility for Society events, booking (and membership).

Is there any way WordPress could cope with this, i.e. people can sign up for membership of this organisation (are there available forms for this?), buy things, some pages only viewed by members? Is WordPress capable of this sort of thing?
