• The website that I manage for a professional organization is down. “HTTP 500 Internal Server Error”. I contacted our server and they said that it was a WordPress issue. So, here I am. I need to know how to get the website back up and running?

    Thanks!
    Tom

Internal server errors (error 500) are often caused by plugin or theme function conflicts, so if you have access to your Dashboard, try deactivating all plugins. If you don’t have access to your Dashboard, try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Seventeen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue. If you don’t have access to your Dashboard, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

If that does not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.

If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed error message. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that specific time period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

Wow… you are speaking a different language. Unfortunately I am not very web savvy. I REALLY appreciate you replying to my topic so quickly! I will give some of your options a try, hopefully I can decipher some of your lingo. I’ll let you know if anything works.

Also when trying to access the website https://mcra.net – I get the error message saying this page cannot be displayed… Notification codes: (1, GATEWAY_TIMEOUT, mcra.net)

You’ll definitely have to work through the steps above, and the guides linked to. I can understand how it seems like a different language, I was right where you are now about 12 years ago.

It’s a very different way of looking at how your site operates, but unfortunately it’s necessary this time around. No time like the present to get familiar with it. ??

Please let us know if you have any more questions!

OK – I am not getting anywhere with the phpMyAdmin route. I try to download phpMyAdmin and it just brings me to a folder that has a bunch of stuff in it, but no wp_options, plugins, option_name, etc.

So I move on… do you know how I would get to my hosting account’s control panel? I’m not even sure what my hosting account is?

phpMyAdmin is in your hosting account’s control panel, it’s not something you install and run on your computer.

Your hosting provider is whomever you pay monthly or yearly to host your site.

According to https://www.whoishostingthis.com/#search=mcra.net your hosting provider is https://www.inmotionhosting.com

This isn’t 100% what you need, but the first few steps will get you to phpMyAdmin: https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/phpmyadmin/export-database-using-phpmyadmin

If you choose the FTP route instead, follow this guide: https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/ftp/getting-started-guide

You can reach their support at https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/user-login
