I’ve read that a website application firewall (WAF) is installed inside a website instead of outside where it will do the most good. Will a WAF improve security on a WP site or is it just a waste of time?

It can certainly improve security. Basically it makes it so that your site cannot be accessed directly anymore, it MUST go through the WAF. This can help mitigate DDOS attacks, attacks that your own server might be susceptible to (but get blocked by the WAF), and a number of other things.

If you’re asking if the concept of a WAF is snake oil, it certainly isn’t. The quality of the specific WAF is another thing altogether though. Do good research and find a reputable one and you’ll be fine.

Topher – thanks for shedding some light on the benefits of a WAF. It sounds like it is a useful application, not snake oil.
