• Hi, I’m trying to install wordpress and I keep getting this message

WordPress requires that your web server is running PHP. Your server does not have PHP installed, or PHP is turned off.

I bought my domain through blogger – with eNOM through google apps. I’m hosting with dreamhost.

I have no idea what a web server is or how to turn on or install PHP

  • If you contact support at Dreamhost and give them the error message, they should be able to guide you through resolving the issue.

Your ‘web server’ is the computer at you hosting company (dreamhost) on which you will set up your web site. The domain name you have bought is just an address that needs to be configured (using ‘nameservers’) to point to your web site on your hosts web server (eNOM should help you do this).

Just to elaborate a bit, PHP is one of the server-side applications necessary for WordPress to function properly. The message you received,

“WordPress requires that your web server is running PHP. Your server does not have PHP installed, or PHP is turned off.”

..is simply indicating that the install script is checking to see if PHP is running, and not finding it.

“I have no idea what a web server is or how to turn on or install PHP”

Since PHP is primarily something your hosting service controls, you may want to contact support at the company that provides your actual web space. Dreamhost, I think you indicated – and let them know about the error. It may be something as simple as a setting in your control panel, or a minor difficulty that Dreamhost can solve for you. Asking their advice on the issue first may be the shortest course of action to a timely and correct solution.
