webp support – unsupported browsers?

Since WP v5.8 webp images are supported but what exactly does that mean?
If I upload an webp image and integrate it into a page, are webp unsupported browsers (safari) supported by wordpress so a replacement format is delivered to the browser?
If not, is there a solution for unsupported browsers if the images are already available as webp?
