• It seems that native WebP images uploaded in the Media Library do not allow for setting thumbnails. When using the Gallery Block, there is no option for setting a thumbnail size if your media is in the WebP format!

I am not using any conversion method after uploading and thought that the WebP format was natively supported in WordPress but it seems it’s not there yet… Is there any chance for thumbnail support for the WebP format in the near future?

  • WordPress’ support for webp does not mean that all images are automatically converted to it or that you can choose the format. Your options are described quite well here: https://kinsta.com/blog/wordpress-5-8/#how-to-use-webp-images-in-wordpress

There are optimization plugins that convert your images to webp. However, this also requires your hosting to provide the corresponding PHP libraries. Not all of them do this. Depending on which plugin you use, you should receive corresponding instructions if it does not work for you.
