    The images are always supposed to load with original extensions using the .htaccess rules, but a 403 error is unexpected. I wonder if perhaps your webhost does not have all the required apache modules loaded. I would ask them to take a look at the .htaccess file and see if there is anything unsupported on their systems.

    As for the alt rewriting, make sure you’re viewing the page in chrome or a supported browser. Firefox and Internet Explorer do NOT support WebP images.
