    Hi guys,
    I know WebP is currently a feature for Pro users, however will that (at some point) trickle down to non-Pro users?
    I’m trying to identify a way to “tweak” Gutenberg picture blocks so they show as:

    <figure>
      <picture>
        <source type="image/webp" src="***.webp">
        <img src="***.jpg>
      </picture>
    </figure>

    However I won’t put in huge amounts of effort into investigating if this is something that Smush will be able to take care of automatically upon uploading media?

  • Hi @willstockstech,

    WebP in Pro version is only available via the CDN option. At the moment there are no plans for making WebP available “on-site”, because it would require the user to install all the required server libraries and, in most cases, do additional server configuration.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Ahhhh, OK makes sense!

    I manually convert my “full” images to WebP prior to upload – so until I can budget for Smush Pro I’ll continue to investigate plugins that might allow me to “manually” define WebP with fallback. It’s tricky to find!

    @vanyukov – sorry to reignite this closed thread, but I have a follow up question! Would WebP support ever come to Free for users that have native WebP conversion methods?

    I have setup my server to support WebP conversion via GD, Imagick and libwebp so wondered whether that might ever be an “advanced” feature?

    @willstockstech,

    This might make it to Smush. I have added this to the feature request.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Interested seeing this feature for non-pro users so I’ll be keeping an eye to this post when this is released if ever. Thanks!
