Since setting up error-404 page on theme Soledad I’m getting an error in Google webmaster – Submitted URL not found (404)
This has been continuous since 9th June to date.
Any clues as to what I’ve done wrong?
I did your most recent update.

Accessing the custom 404 page directly by its URL results in an error 404. That is the desired behavior.

I assume that you send an XML sitemap to Google. Otherwise Google would not try to index the page. You should exclude the 404 page from the XML sitemap. Take a look at the manual of the plugin you’re using to create the sitemap.

If you’re using Yoast SEO to create the sitemap you do not need to do anything. Since version 6 of the 404page plugin the custom 404 page is automatically excluded from the sitemap generated by Yoast. Just give Google a few days until the change takes effect.

Thanks Peter, that makes sense and yes I did ask Google to index this page – not realizing that was unnecessary.
I am using Yoast and the 404-error page was showing in the sitemap – it has now ceased to appear, so as you say it will just take a few days for Google to catch up.
    Thanks again

    Hi Vanessa,

I’m glad that the problem is no longer a problem ??
